RPG Book Illustrations -Japanese Fantasy Setting
The setting for this book is a medieval Japanese fantasy world filled with ghosts, dragons, and undead samurai. Below are a cover and a selection of black and white illustrations I created for the setting. The publisher also purchased publication rights to several Japanese themed illustrations from my back catalogue.
This cover  required a range of reference materials. The castle was easy enough to find on the internet. The dragon was influenced by Japanese prints and murals and the samurai armour was based on a statue I viewed in Shimonoseki, the site of the Battle of Dan-no-Ura. It's a larger than life bronze of a  dynamic samurai figure in full armour flinging an anchor. (It was a naval battle.)
For this book I wanted to develop a detailed black and white rendering style reminiscent of old scratchboard or etching techniques. Following are the illustrations in this style produced for the project.
